Moved house? The hard work isn’t quite over, and you may find yourself looking for who to inform when moving house and a change of address checklist.

One of the biggest stresses after your move comes from updating your address, and it can be something that continues to crop up for months to come if you don’t remember everything.

As you’re in the process of updating your address with everyone, you may want to consider redirecting your mail so you don’t miss anything important. If you are moving out of a family home, you may not need to worry about mail redirection, (as they’ll be nice enough to keep a hold of it for you), but otherwise you may find it a good idea to put on a redirect through Royal Mail. This means that any mail addressed to your old house will be redirected to your new home (though there are costs associated with this).

Once you’re ready to start updating you’ll need a checklist to work through. We’ve broken down who you need to notify when you move into seven categories:

Household

Everything to do with your household will need to be updated. This will include any bills or contracts that are based at home.

  • Council tax
  • TV cable/Sky service
  • Phone
  • Broadband
  • TV licence
  • Electric
  • Gas
  • Water
  • Home insurance

Financial

Make sure you don’t mess up access to your money, be quick to update anything financial.

  • Bank
  • Loan companies (including student loans)
  • HMRC (your employer may be able to do this for you)
  • Life insurance

Car

Legally, you need to ensure all of your car information is up to date, otherwise you risk your insurance being invalidated, or facing fines from the DVLA.

  • DVLA (get your driving licence updated)
  • Vehicle log book V5C (the paper that shows you own the vehicle and where it is registered to)
  • Vehicle breakdown cover
  • Car insurance

Other Essentials

As well as things based in your household, there are other important bodies and contacts that you will need to update with your new address.

  • Friends and family
  • Electoral roll
  • Your employer
  • School/College/University

Health

Changing your address is important for almost everything on this list, but health is definitely one of the top ones. Make sure you update your records with the NHS, so they have the correct information should there be an emergency, as well as not miss out on any important appointments.

  • GP Surgery
  • Dentist
  • Optician
  • Therapist

Pets

Don’t forget about the other members of the family! Your pets information will need to be updated to make sure they don’t miss out on important paperwork (or a great deal on their food!).

  • Vets
  • Pet insurance
  • Pet discount / loyalty cards

Lifestyle

These are the odds and ends that are most personal to you, and the ones that can be the easiest to forget about. Going through your online and store accounts to update your address is a wise idea.

  • Gym
  • Newspaper/magazine subscriptions
  • Store cards
  • Online groceries
  • Regular online deliveries such as Amazon
