Nottinghamshire is well-known for the legendary Robin Hood, and you can still experience part of the story by visiting the giant Major Oak. At home in Sherwood Forest, the oak was supposedly a hideout for Robin and his merry men. It has a spread of 28 metres making it the biggest oak tree in Britain. Joining in this record breaking status is Nottingham's Old Market Square, which at 5.5 acres is the biggest in England, as well as the sundial in Portland Square, Sutton-in-Ashfield, which is the largest in Europe.
Nottinghamshire also boasts several fairs and museums of note, including the biggest antiques fair in Europe, which is held in Newark 6 times a year, and Nottingham’s Goose Fair which was given a royal charter in 1284. The National Civil War Centre in Newark and The Museum of Timekeeping are fantastic places to visit and are home to a huge amount of local history. The county is also famous for its ties to comic book hero Batman. The feature film, ‘The Dark Night Rises’, features Wollaton Hall as Wayne Manor, while Gotham village in Nottinghamshire is a popular destination for fans.
With access to the M1, A1 and A46, reaching nearby neighbouring towns and cities couldn’t be easier. Nottingham itself boasts fantastic public transport links, with regular trains, buses and trams to help you get around.
