The school summer holidays see millions of people heading off to enjoy a week or two of fun and much-needed relaxation away from home, work and school. Unfortunately, this time where a number of properties are left unoccupied, means that break-ins are more commonplace. However, there are a few simple things you can do to give you peace of mind that your home is safe and secure while you’re away.

General Summer Security Tips

Lock your doors and windows - This may seem like common sense, but it’s very easy to forget which doors or windows are open when you pop out to the shop, or even windows being open at the front of the house whilst you’re spending a day in the back garden.

Hide all keys - Including house and car keys so that they are out of sight, and out of reach of the letterbox or open windows (consider that someone may be using something to hook keys, so it needs to be more than an arm's reach away). Really it is good practice to keep anything valuable out of sight of ground floor windows.

Install good outside lighting - Security lights act as a great deterrent for potential thieves and can spook them enough into leaving. It also means that if you do have any security cameras, anyone lurking around will be well lit!

Secure the outdoors - Taking some time to keep everything outside secure and in good shape will go a long way to stop opportunist thieves. Firstly, make sure any fences or gates are in a good condition and kept locked. If you’ve been using tools or ladders, make sure they are locked away once you are done, along with any bikes or more expensive kids toys that have been enjoyed in the sun.

Holiday Security Tips

Stay off social - It is really tempting to post the insta-perfect cocktail or jealousy-inducing beach shot, but advertising that you are away from home could leave it at risk. Save your beautiful photos for when you return home.

Community watch - Ask a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your property, or a nearby friend or family member to check in on your home while you’re away. Still having human activity in and out of your home, along with them opening/closing curtains can give the impression there is still someone nearby.

Make use of timers - Leave lamps or radios on a timer, to give the impression you’re still at home. You can get basic timer plugs to set these up, or use a more sophisticated system with smart plugs that you can control from your phone.

Whilst you're away - It’s not just about security at home. While you’re away, store any high-value items (such as passports or jewellery) in a properly secured safe.

We hope you have a sunny and safe summer season! If you’re looking for your next home, and want a property that is built with security in mind, take a look at a Jelson home. Many of our developments have show homes open during weekends across the summer.
